As a child, I loved all kinds of arts, crafts, music, and stories. I had a great imagination, and I loved trying new things. It didn’t last. By the time I was a teenager, I had convinced myself that I was a dreadful writer, had no artistic skills, wasn’t musical and should stop trying.
But it wasn’t a single event that caused me to believe I was untalented and uncreative. It was a series of tiny events that I gave meaning to. I wasn't aware of what I was doing at the time, but the consequences were long lasting.
When I was 18, I was obsessed with Jilly Cooper’s books. I wrote a story in a similar style and showed it to a friend. She was very enthusiastic about it and I panicked. What if I had been wrong about being a terrible writer? What else was I wrong about? I took my story-which was handwritten because it was 1993–and I burned it. I didn’t write again until I was 40.
When I had my son, I rediscovered the world of art, crafts and storytelling. I picked up some creative hobbies again and found, as is often the case as you get older, that I cared much less about other people’s opinions.
I eventually started writing again, and I became interested in why I could write easily, even joyfully, at some times, but I couldn’t do anything creative at all at others.
I learned about the importance of mindset when I read a book about the law of attraction on holiday. I had picked it up out of interest rather than because I believed in it, but it sparked an idea in me. The vast majority of what I read was about making money and I wondered if it was possible to apply the same methods to becoming more creative.
I started learning hypnotherapy to see how I could use it to change my mindset towards writing. After this, I kept studying, and went on to learn NLP, strategic life coaching, CBT and REBT, all with a view to how they could apply to the creative process.
I spent time determining exactly why I found it so hard to write or draw or knit when I love doing those things and I have an abundance of ideas.
Using what I learned, I have developed a program to help other creative people change their mindset to express themselves fully.
